Unrealized ARCADY Project: Myrtle Beach's Lost Grand Vacation Community

by Todd Vandersline / MBlocal.org

Raymond Hood, a renowned American architect famous for iconic buildings like the Tribune Tower in Chicago and Rockefeller Center in New York City, also worked on the unrealized ARCADY Project in Myrtle Beach. The grand vacation community was planned to open in the 1930s but never came to fruition due to economic challenges from the Wall Street Crash, Great Depression, and Banking Panics. The project's prospectus, now available digitally through Chapin Memorial Library, outlined a modern ownership model similar to today's Property Owners Associations.

John T. Woodside, a businessman from Greenville, South Carolina, envisioned Arcady as a national playground for contemporary life's leaders. The Woodside Brothers, including John T. Woodside, invested in the project and purchased beachfront property in Horry County. The Ocean Forest Hotel, known for its opulence, was part of the vision for Arcady but was eventually demolished in 1974.

Pine Lakes International Country Club, the first golf course in Myrtle Beach, has a rich history dating back to 1927 and is a significant landmark in the area. The club was also the birthplace of Sports Illustrated magazine in 1954. The Ocean Forest Hotel, a luxurious resort in Myrtle Beach, operated successfully until the 1960s before being demolished in 1974.

The legacy of these projects and the vision of individuals like Raymond Hood and John T. Woodside provide insight into Myrtle Beach's history and the development of the city as we know it today.
