Mass Casualty Training Exercise Held in Columbus Ohio

Staff Report / cbuslocal.org

On Thursday, October 10, members of the Columbus Division of Fire participated in a mass casualty incident full-scale exercise at Bolton Field. This training was organized by the Columbus Regional Airport Authority and rotated annually between John Glenn Columbus International Airport, Rickenbacker International Airport, and Bolton Field.

During the exercise, volunteers portrayed victims, and members of the Medical Reserve Corps applied realistic makeup to enhance the experience. The scenario involved a driver suffering a medical emergency at the Motors and Rotors event, a local car and airplane exhibition. The driver lost control of their vehicle, resulting in collisions with spectators and a plane on display, which subsequently caught fire.

Firefighters from multiple agencies, including Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF), Columbus Fire, and nearby townships, practiced fighting a simulated airplane fire. A mock fuselage was set ablaze to allow firefighters to refine their skills.

Medical personnel used the SALT Mass Casualty Triage Algorithm—Sort, Assess, Lifesaving Interventions, Treatment/Transport—to prioritize care for the victims. Following initial assessments, victims were marked with one of five color-coded ribbons based on the severity of their injuries. They were then transported to Mount Carmel East or Mount Carmel Grove City via COTA buses.

A key focus of the training was interagency collaboration. First responders from various departments and agencies united to work together effectively. Helena Nova-Thatcher, Emergency Preparedness Senior Specialist for the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, emphasized the importance of this joint effort for real-world application.

Columbus Fire Captain Jake Rotthoff expressed satisfaction with the exercise, noting it was beneficial for integrating different crews and working towards a shared objective.
