1886 Charleston Earthquake Felt in Myrtle Beach, Horry

The great Charleston earthquake of August 31, 1886, had an impact on Myrtle Beach and Horry County. The earthquake, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, caused significant damage in Charleston, resulting in the loss of 60 lives and destruction to almost every building. The effects of the earthquake were not limited to Charleston, as it was felt in various locations including Myrtle Beach, Boston, Milwaukee, Chicago, Bermuda, and Cuba. Structural damage was reported as far away as Alabama, Ohio, Kentucky, and Virginia. This historical event is commemorated by a sign along the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk.
