Winifred Colton started her YMCA career as the women's and girls' work secretary at the YMCA of Metro Chicago, working to improve the status of women in the organization. In 1957, the YMCA's National Council changed its statement of purpose to include women, and Colton became the first woman professional on the national staff. This change marked a significant step forward for gender equality within the YMCA.
